I would avoid shifting under load at any time. Especially downshifts. I have the 3 x 8 and I would ease the pressure on the pedals to shift. I would say that you should ease the pressure on either up or downshifts on the 3 x 7.

Gears working all right now? How's the neck? Iget pains like that when I try too hard to ride. I have to remember to drop my shoulders.
I've heard of RAGBRAI. There were more BikeEs in that ride than there are in the whole of Ireland.
I covered 65 miles in one day after only doing 63 in the previous six months. I survived. I ended up doing 150 miles that week. That was the first week of my holidays. I've been trying to do a 35 - 40 mile ride each week as that is all I can manage due to my workload.
I've never managed 45 but I got up to 41mph. It was good. So stable ;D

Robin.

I replaced my SRAM 3.0 with a 5.0 rear mechanism. I have heard of ones using Shimano Deore and Rapidfire instead of SRAM. I think it was Philip. They seem to be compatible. I just have a thing about keeping the drive train all the same make but then my gripshift was stil working fine.

Robin.

I did replace my rear derailleur with a Shimano Deore XT and a SRAM 5.0 grip shifter. The interesting thing is this combination has not required adjustment for over 3 years ;D Everything works beautifully together.
