My NX is out of service until I can get the brakes fixed or replaced. My dealer has been excellent about it, spending several hours trying to get the Hayes hydraulic system to work, to no avail. Does anyone have a spare, or parts? Hayes does not make this system anymore. I am also trying to replace it with a manually operated disc, but I need to have an adapter part specially made in a machine shop. Very few of these exist in the DC area. Please advise.

I also have an NX which has been sitting up for some time - I was going to go through and clean it up but was looking for a instructions on the Hayes Disc Brakes. The Hayes web site has numerous types, many of which look very similar; however, I don't know the specific model. The infomation on the caliper looks the same and the "guts" of the lever section seem to be the same but don't know the differances

Ended up talking with Hayes - very helpful and informative. The HFX-Mag levers are a direct replacement for the G-1's on the NX. I bought my replacements from Beyond Bikes in CA for aroound $80 each - they connect right to the existing hoses. If the hoses are shot - the HFX-Mag hoses are the correct fitting, lenghts may be a question. The Calipers - fortunately mine were OK - the new Hayes HFX-Mag and HFX-9 calipers use the same pads but the 9 uses a different hose connection. The other problem - the caliper on the NX had about a 25 mm bolt pattern, the new Hayes standard is 74 mm - ooops Suppossedly they make an adapter - Beyond Bikes didn't have one in inventory when they checked but might be able to order. The complete HFX-Mag was around $159 each, the HFX-9's were on sale for $59 and with an adapter would bolt right on [hose issues but do-able]

I was talking to my LBS about putting the Hayes on our E2 she said that in her opinion that a Avid BB7 would be cheaper and better than the hydraulic system. The costs you have listed would probably be more than just seitching the whole system out, unless you are trying to keep the bike original.

This was a timely message as I am about to start an overhaul on my NX in a week or so. I am signed up as a working student with the local bike shop; one of our tasks is to lace a new 16" rim onto the existing hub. The other job is to fix the front brake which has lost pressure completely in the hydraulics. I hope I can maintain the hydraulic brakes - they are such great stoppers.

For anyone that is still interested. My Hayes hydraulic disc brake was leaking on my NX. I had my lbs contact Hayes about a rebuild. They directed them to a nearby vendor that did the rebuild. Brakes are working great. If you search online you can find the rebuild kits. They are cheap. Hayes has instructions online if you feel confident doing it yourself.
